Goats live side by side with a man for about eight thousand years. Probably, there is no corner on the planet where they would not be held. Animals deserve their popularity with nutritious milk and unpretentious content. Recently, in our country, interest in the goats of the Nubian and Saanen breeds has increased. Although, of course, the Russian white imported goats were not pushed off the pedestal, but took their place next to them with dignity.

So how do lovers of goat milk, to whom I also belong, understand what breed of goats to choose?

The question is very interesting and relevant for many, so I decided to conduct a little of my own research and share its results with you, dear readers. I singled out the three most important parameters for assessing the breeds: performance, docility of nature and acclimatization to our conditions.

Well, with a notebook in one hand and a camera in the other, your obedient servant went to distant lands in villages and villages ...

NUBIAN GOATS

The first one I was able to meet was a Nubian goat, or, as it is correctly called, an Anglo-Nubian breed. These goats are brought to us from England. “English Sirs” I always imagined to be sedate, sedate and imperturbable, so I waited for the goats with the English pedigree to make the same impression on me. And what my amazement was when I saw the most amusing brown creatures, fervently jumping on the pasture!

There was no reason to doubt that these were the “sirs” - very cute hanging ears, a wide crooked nose, large eyes, an upper lip, baring teeth, shorter than the lower one. You can imagine how ridiculous these goats look, which, by the way, does not prevent them from giving good milk yield.

Self-grazing goats are very playful and restless, but do not worry that it will be difficult to cope with them, this is not at all the case.

As soon as the owner appeared on the horizon, the goats were transformed and became very agreeable. The owner Nikolai Ivanovich explained that the goats consider him the leader of the herd, therefore they are not able to disobey. I was invited into the house and treated to goat milk.

And the milk had no smell, it was very pleasant to the taste and quite fat, from about 5 fat and above. At the same time, the taste of milk does not depend on feed, conditions of detention and other external factors, although this does not mean that you can not take care of goats. The taste of neglect on your part, of course, will have little effect, but on the amount of milk will significantly affect.

Goats are very tall; in two years they have a height in the withers of 80-90 cm and a weight of about 70-80 kg. Another interesting detail: the goat does not emit any smell, even j in the mating period, this allows you to keep it in the same room with the goats.

In general, from these wonderful goats you can get not only a charge of good mood, but also a good milk yield, about 3 liters per day.

SAILED GOATS

Next on my path were two beautiful goats with white beards and long muzzles belonging to the Saanen breed.

Their slender high legs resembled the legs of a gazelle and held onto a rather powerful body. Goat mass of about 60 kg with growth of 70-75 cm, almost not inferior to the Nubian goats. But most of all I was impressed by the udder, it is just huge! Any cow can envy. It may not be a very good comparison, but it looked like a full can of milk.

Goats peacefully grazed near the planting, eating birch branches, by the way, the branches are their favorite delicacy.

Well, still they would have fun, with such an udder you can’t particularly jump, otherwise you can’t spill everything ... So the definition of “goat-dereza” doesn’t refer to the goats of Zaanen breed. They are very accommodating and friendly. You would see how they greet their mistress Anna Petrovna, just like gentle cats, literally rub against their legs and turn up their necks, they say, stroke them. Here I managed not only to drink fresh milk, but also, with the permission of the hostess, to milk it myself. The goat was not mine, and, in theory, it should not have been: let the stranger to her, but apparently she was broken off by the kind words with which I and the hostess showered her and behaved surprisingly meekly. It is believed that the Zaanen goat gives 3.5 liters of milk per day, but Anna Petrovna convinced me that her goats delight me with 4-4.5 liters daily. Fat content in milk is 3.5% -4.5%.

It turned out that the yield comes out: more than that of the Nubian, but the zaanen goats lose a little by the milk fat content. Well, it is: it depends on which side to see what is more important to whom, as in the proverb “Who loves a watermelon, and who the swine is: cartilage”.

Milk has absolutely no specific smell, which cannot be said about the goats of this breed, here the joint content will not work. But the zaanensky goats have their own trump card - the offspring from them noticeably adds milk yield, therefore goats are often crossed with goats of other, not so milky breeds.

RUSSIAN WHITE GOAT

White Russian is probably the best representative of our domestic breeds. These goats have well defined joints, a flat body, small ears, and a small beard. The suit is predominantly white. This is all the information that I learned, walking on a visit to the last goat. But for some reason she was sure that “a fisherman sees a fisherman from afar,” so I can definitely recognize the Russian, even if a goat soul, from the rest of the crowd.

Goats in the meadow grazed a lot, probably all that is in the village, and each is tied to its own peg. Yes, the task is not as easy as it seemed to me at first ... Almost all the goats on this meadow are white, it’s not so easy to see the ears from afar. Of course, I was at a distance, you never know would climb into these marvelous horned heads. But I did consider the large, clearly defined knee joints in one goat. She, probably, felt that she was being examined, and went into continuous bleating, to which a rather young woman, who was sitting on a small bench near the outer courtyard, vividly reacted. It turned out that she was the hostess of a goat, scared by me.

The woman introduced herself as Marina, untied the goat, then another, then another, and finally two rather big growth (with mother) goatlings. Imagine, and I, it turns out, only one Russian soul could see instead of five! We went into the yard, simultaneously discussing all the charms of this breed.

Russian white goats are not very large, weighing from 40 to 50 kg, goats a little more than 60-70 kg. Goats give milk about 3 liters per day with high fat content - 4.5% -5.5%. Goats are very fertile, they can bring goats twice a year, and at the same time 3-4 babies each. The skin of goats of this breed is very valuable, it is used for making chevro.

Difficult choice - which breed of goat is better?

We draw conclusions from my little research. First, all goats give a large amount of milk, and they are sufficiently fat. Secondly, they are well adapted to our conditions, they feel great both in winter and in summer. Well, about the character, too, everything seems to be clear: calm Zaanen, playful, but respectful owner, Nubian goats and very clever - white Russians. None of the owners complained about the harmfulness and uncontrollability of their goats. It means that these goats, like any animals, value their care and obediently follow the breadwinner.

Now, about feeding, no particular eating habits among the goats of these breeds have been identified, everyone is fed in a simple way, without pineapples and hazel grouses. Freshly cut grass, willow and birch twigs, vegetables and root crops from the garden (beets, zucchini, potatoes) are included in the ration; hay is prepared in advance for the goat in winter.

We must not forget that, whatever your breed may be, there are also general principles for the care of these animals and the individual characteristics of each goat, regardless of the breed. For example, an early coated goat usually milks well, but not for long, its body wears quickly. Late coated goes from a number of dairy to meat, that is, it gets fat and gives little milk. Milk after the 2-3 rd lambing is noticeably added.

But only, which breed is the best, I haven’t figured out, in my opinion, everyone is good. Maybe you can choose? And, by the way, for me it still remains a mystery who invented that goat's milk has an unpleasant smell. None of the goats have been noticed! Well, if the hostess catches the animals careless, not wanting to care for their cattle, then there is no fault of the goat in this and no breed will fix it.

Meet the Zaanenskoe goat breed

Many experts and advanced experts believe that the represented breed of goats is the most dairy breed in the whole modern world. The birthplace of this breed of goat is rightly considered the town of Zaanen, which is located in Switzerland, namely in the Bernese Alps. This breed, in fact, many experienced experts consider the very first in terms of milk yield.

Fully reliable information about the creation and general origin of a typical Zaanensko goat, alas, is not currently available. Undoubtedly, when creating such an amazing breed of goats, careful selection of animals and special feeding conditions, which in the Alps are very useful and positive for goat breeding, prevailed.

You should know that at one time, in the beginning of the 20th century (at the beginning of the first decade), such goats were brought to the Russian Empire in the regions of St. Petersburg, Moscow, Kazan, Yaroslavl, and other cities. After that, they received wide recognition and distribution throughout the territory, as very many livestock breeders and private owners were convinced of the excellent qualities and prospects of this breed for breeding.

Often, in such a breed of modern goats, the body has a deep shape, long and rather extensive. The general musculature is rather poor, which, undoubtedly, is a definite shortcoming of this breed. In some cases, representatives of this amazing breed have a typical "vislozadosty". As a rule, the limbs of representatives of the breed are strong, precisely set, with hooves of typical light yellow shades. Of the individual limbs can be - clubfoot and even sometimes sabistic.

Standard live weight in normal adult goats may be about 45.0-55.0 kg, but in males up to - 70.0-80.0 kg. Udder is usually in such large goats, of some pear-shaped form, it is well developed and has a general direction a little forward. You should know that such modern goats by their mass are usually referred to the largest available dairy breeds. Modern Zaanen goats are the preferred type of typical goats for the dairy direction. Namely, such goats have a small head with rather long, and you can say “semi-erect” ears. Representatives of the breed are often hackneyed (typical horned representatives for the “divorce” of the offspring will often not be left). The necks of the goats of this breed are rather flat, longish, sometimes there are separate skin growths, called “earrings”.

The coat is usually short and rather shiny, the suit is white, but if they have some black spots on their skin, then the hair on such zones is also white. In fact, all this is one of the signs of pure breed. Milk goats of this variety according to statistics give out about 600.0-700.0 kg of class milk for 1 year, and even with intensive, intensive feeding, even 1000.0-1200.0 kg. The maximum milk yield of these goats' milk, which perfectly adapt even to difficult living conditions, was about 3498.0 kg per lactation.

Zaanen breed

The homeland of this goat is Switzerland, namely the Zaanen valley, where these animals are actively bred to this day.

Zaanen breed is considered the best among all dairy breeds and combines not only high productivity, but also excellent health and longevity.

Zaaneysky goats are the largest animals of this species. Adult goat can weigh 40 - 60 kg, and the goat - 75-80 kg. The torso of these goats is elongated, the legs are long, and the chest is voluminous.

The head is of medium size, the muzzle is slightly extended forward, the ears are of medium length, the neck is elongated, there may be “earrings”. The coat is white or cream colored, rather short.

Nubian breed

The second name of this breed is the Anglo-Nubian goat, because at one time the breeders from England slightly changed these African animals, and it is the modified goats that are bred today.

Direction Nubian goats - meat and dairy. They are as large as those of Zaane. Goat can gain 54 - 56 kg of live weight, and the goat - 67-70 kg.

Distinguished Nubian breed of goats long and durability of their legs. The body of these animals is thin and long. Udder large, nipples also. The neck is long, thin.

Nubian goats can be born as komolyami, and with horns, but with their presence there is a significant difference in length: the goats of the horn are small or medium length, and the goats are long.

The legs of these goats are humpback, their ears hang down. The body is covered with short shiny hair of different colors (black, brown, white, spotted). Temperament have them calm, they are very graceful in their movements, they love affection and attention.

Milk Nubian goats give a very good, nutritious (fat content of more than 5%), has a pleasant creamy taste.

In general, the milk of Nubian goats is very similar in composition to the breast milk of the mother. Milk is also devoid of any unpleasant smell. A goat that gave birth 2 or more times, on average, gives at least 6 liters of milk per day.

Nubian goat breed needs an excellent diet in which fruit must be present. Feed the animals need strictly on the clock. It is also necessary to provide goats with plenty of water.

Alpine breed

This goat is home to Switzerland. Initially, these animals were kept on pastures in the Alps, hence the name of the breed.

The color of wool in Alpine goats can be the most diverse - and white, and black, and light gray, and dark brown. But all animals have a general characteristic in color - the muzzle, ears, lower abdomen and legs are painted in dark colors to the knee joint, and the rest of the body is gray-brown.

Alpine goats krupnovaty, but, despite the size, quite graceful. The body is strong, the head is small, light, shortened in length.

The horns are flat-oval, but sometimes goats are born with congenital cone. Ears are medium, erect. The neck is shortened, the sternum is voluminous and deep. The back forms a straight line. In the area of ​​the sacrum, the body sags down, and the sacrum is short and narrow.

Legs are small and thin. The hooves are covered with a very strong cornea, but soft tissues are elastic, which creates excellent cushioning. The hair is short, but in the hips and on the back it grows longer than on the rest of the body.

An adult goat weighs, on average, 60 - 63 kg, and a goat - 76 - 79 kg. A goat can give birth to more than 2 kids at a time. Milkiness is also high, for lactation one goat gives 750 - 900 kg of milk.

Some animals can produce up to 1200 - 1600 kg of dairy product. Duration of lactation is about 280 - 350 days (9 - 12 months).

Milk fat content ranges between 3.5 and 5.5%. The milk itself is pleasant and delicate in taste, used to make various products, often cheeses. Indicators of meat productivity are also high.

The temperament of these goats is very calm, they respond well to gentle treatment. But these animals are rather stubborn, and in the case of herd content they show egoism towards the rest of the living creatures. Sometimes they repel other animals from the feeders, but they eat enough.

They are unpretentious to the conditions of detention and feeds, they quickly get used to the new conditions of life, are very hardy and tenacious. Can be kept in the herd.

Angora breed

This breed of goat was bred in Turkey, and it was named after the capital of Ankara, Angora.

The main suit of the Angora goats is white, but there have been cases that the wool was gray, black or silver. This breed is universal, that is, it gives meat, and milk, and wool.

The body of the Angora goat is short, and the animal itself is loose. The head is small, in the area of ​​the nose there is a crook. The goat's horns are small, thin, bend back. At the same goats, the horns are larger, more powerful, spiral-shaped. The neck is thin and short. Animals of both sexes have a beard.

Ears are large, long, droop down. Sternum of small volume, small width. The line of the back is straight, but sags in the sacrum area.

Legs are small, but powerful, with strong hooves, often correctly set.

For half a year lactation, one goat gives 70 - 90 kg of milk. Meat yield is good - 40-45%. Meat is fatty, but juicy, it smells nice. From one animal you can get 4-6 kg of wool, the output of which is 65 - 70%. Mohair received a very wide range of applications - from fabrics to gloves and socks.

Angora breed goats are unpretentious in caring and feeding. They are not afraid of any heat or cold. These animals can be almost all year round in the pasture.

If you are late with a haircut, the animal will begin to fade, from which it loses a lot of valuable wool.

These goats should be protected as much as possible from strong changes in the external environment, and especially from drafts.

Sometimes there can be an admixture of awn (1-3%) in mohair, from which the quality of mohair drops.

If animals live in a changing climate, but their fertility and wool quality will decrease. Angora goats have poorly developed maternal instinct.

The most popular dairy breeds of goats

Among all the varieties of this trend the most famous are:

  • zaanensky goats,
  • Toggenburg,
  • alpine,
  • nubian

Such a short list is due to the fact that most dairy goats were obtained by crossing these four species with others.

This is a German white, and British Zaanenskaya, and Anglo-Nubian, and so on. Without these basic breeds of goats breeding work in any country does not cost. In addition, not all breeds of goats receive official recognition. For example, during the times of the Soviet Union, the Gorky breed was not recognized, bred by crossing Saanen and Russian purebred animals, as a result of which the breeding base of this variety was never really created. In the recognized world goat power, Switzerland, only seven breeds of goats are officially registered.

Zaanensky dairy breed

Of the four basic varieties, experts highlight Zaanenskaya (another name is Zaenthal or Simmental).

It is home to the Swiss mountain regions of Simmental and Zaanental. This breed was obtained by the method of perennial national selection, which resulted in the appearance of goats with the highest milk productivity, well adapted to life in both mountainous and lowland areas. These animals belong to the largest representatives of the goat tribe.

Males of these animals reach 90 centimeters at the withers and can weigh 90-100 kilograms. Female zaanenok weigh an average of 50 kilograms with growth of 76-78 centimeters. The weight of newborn goats is on average three kilograms, the kids are four and a half five. One-year-old calves of this species weigh around 30 kilos.

Shami breed goats

These animals differ from their relatives very unusual and even frightening appearance. Although in the homeland of goats of the Shami breed, in the countries of the Middle East, they are considered extremely attractive (Figure 12).

Note: Representatives of the Shami breed are also called Damascus, although they are bred only in Syria, but also in other countries of the Middle East. The role of these animals in the daily life and culture of local peoples is so great that information about these goats is found even in chronicles and oral folk art.

Despite the fact that Shami goats do not look too attractive, in fact they have a soft sweet temper, they quickly get used to the person and do not cause their owner trouble. In combination with versatility, this breed can be considered one of the best for breeding at home.

These animals are distinguished by high fertility and precocity, they quickly increase their weight and give high-quality tasty milk, and their wool is highly valued in the market. The only problem - individuals of the Shami breed until recently were distributed only in the Middle East, so finding a purebred animal outside this region can be difficult.

Goats breed Lamancha

Representatives of this species are widely known for their milk production. The breed got its name due to the eponymous Spanish province, where these animals first appeared. Over time, unpretentious and high-yielding individuals spread throughout the world.

Note: The main direction of the productivity of goats Lamanche - getting milk. The average individual gives 4-5 liters of milk per day, and in the most productive this indicator can reach 9 liters.

The content of this species is popular for several reasons. Firstly, these animals adapt very quickly to new living conditions and tolerate very different climatic conditions. Secondly, they have a mild, docile nature, therefore, problems with their content will not arise even among beginner breeders. In addition, there is no unpleasant, specific odor in meat and milk.

It is noteworthy that this breed has almost no flaws. The only thing you can blame animals for is the small size of the ears, which makes it impossible to attach a tag (Figure 13). However, this problem is quite easy to solve with a special tattoo on the tail. In addition, you should be prepared for the fact that the kindness and docility of animals is sometimes excessive, and the owner will need to pay a lot of attention to their pets and pamper them regularly.

Czech goat breed

This breed appeared relatively recently, about a century ago, and local breeds of brown and beige were crossed for its breeding (Figure 16). This allowed to significantly improve the productivity of animals. Next, the resulting individuals were crossed with productive Alpine goats, thereby increasing not only the milk production of animals, but also the duration of lactation.

Note: In addition to high yields, Czech individuals have a very attractive appearance and pleasant coat color.

Farmers who have already checked the profitability of breeding the Czech breed, claim that these animals can produce up to a ton of milk per year, but if the animals are provided with an optimal feeding and feeding regime, this indicator can be doubled.

Brown Czech goats are increasingly in demand because of their numerous advantages and the almost complete lack of flaws. First, one adult goat gives 4 to 6 liters of milk per day, and it has no specific unpleasant smell and taste. In addition, lactation lasts up to 11 months a year, which is also an important advantage of the breed.

Secondly, Czech goats are great for breeding for meat. Since young animals are rapidly gaining weight, already at the age of seven months goats weigh about 25 kg and can be sent for slaughter. In addition, females are distinguished by high fecundity: they bring two goats for each lambing, but some individuals can also bring three young.

The only drawback of the breed is considered high temperature intolerance. In the summer heat the productivity of animals decreases, therefore, at extremely high temperatures, it is better not to drive livestock to pasture.

Orenburg goat

The breeds described in the previous sections belonged primarily to the meat or dairy direction of productivity. But a description of the best breeds of goats would be incomplete without information about the down animals to which representatives of the Orenburg breed belong (Figure 17).

Outwardly, these are rather large animals with a strong build. The weight of adult females can reach 60 kg, and the males even weigh more than 90 kg. But the main value of animals is not in their great weight, but in thick and soft black wool, which is used to produce a wide variety of textiles.

Note: On average, with one such individual you can get about 0.5 kg of high-quality fluff, and due to the high fecundity of the females, the livestock will quickly bring profits to its owner.

Orenburg goats are remarkable for their stamina. They are well tolerated by cold and sudden temperature changes, easily adapt to new living conditions, although their milk productivity is extremely low. In this case, old animals can be sent to the slaughter, because the slaughter output of carcasses is about 45%, and the meat has a high taste.

What to look for when choosing a milk goat

It is better to choose an animal according to the following parameters:

  • udder shape and texture
  • volumes of the back, pelvis and chest,
  • posing legs.

How to choose a milk goat

A healthy animal should have a bulky breast, massive and bulky back and pelvis. Legs - straight and straight. Udder should not be sealed or loose. The udder of a healthy goat has elastic skin, the nipples are long and directed in different directions.

It is better to choose short-haired breeds that are easier to care for. Age goats can be determined by the teeth. A kid until the age of 18 months has no incisors, after this period the milk teeth begin to be gradually replaced by incisors and molars.

By the age of six, the animal begins to fall out, gaps form between the teeth, they stagger. From good food and care, the teeth of animals are kept longer and are less often erased. The goat brings record volumes of milk production after feeding the 2nd and 3rd offspring. After six years, milk yield begins to decrease.

This type of pet is famous for its record milk yield. Saanen pets are massive creatures. Their height at the withers can reach up to 90 cm, and their weight up to 100 kg. The fecundity and abundance of milk are advantages of this breed.

Unfortunately, it is difficult to find thoroughbred representatives of the breed in Russia.

Zaanen goat breed: description

  • white color (in other countries there are cream colored breeds, but they are not bred in Russia),
  • wide back and chest
  • short horns (zaanenskie goats are komolami),
  • thick legs firmly on the ground
  • the mucous membrane of the mouth has a pink tint,
  • the animal is shorthair,
  • has an oblong body and a volume straight back,
  • the muzzle is wide,
  • massive neck.

This breed can bring up to 700 liters of milk per year. With proper care and abundant feeding, milk yield increases to 1200 liters. The big plus of this breed is the complete absence of unpleasant smell. Only non-neutered goat males smell, so they should be isolated.

Curious Nubian Goats

Nubians - a graceful English breed. For beginners, it is better to start breeding goats from local breeds, which are less whimsical to the conditions of detention and feed. English breeds do not tolerate improper care. In this case, their milk yield is significantly reduced.

The big plus of this breed is high-quality full-fat milk with creamy taste. Nubians milk fat content reaches 4.5 percent. This type of goat, including males, does not smell of an animal, its milk does not smell either. The Nubian goat produces up to 3 liters of milk per day during lactation. Milk contains up to 3.7 percent protein.

These goats are large in size. At the withers the breed reaches 74 cm, and its weight fluctuates around 80 kg. A characteristic color is a combination of black, white brown and red spots.

Animals of this breed produce smaller amounts of milk than zaanensky goats. But their milk is of excellent quality and lack of smell. The minus of the breed is conflict and mobility. Goats like to butt, so the horns of young kids are better to burn.

Nubians have a wild character, so they should be trained. They like to communicate with people, just coming to the host on pastures. The goats try to avoid conflict with the leaders of the flock, and therefore move away from the feeder in their presence.

This breed is suitable for experienced breeders who know a lot about unscented dairy goats. Nubians are demanding to care, they must be constantly looked after and educated. In gratitude, the pets will delight the owners with high-quality, fat milk, which makes excellent cheese.

Traditional Russian breed

For many centuries Russian goats have lived in various regions of central and northwestern Russia. They have a light color and a beard. Their fur may be short if it is southern, or long, if the animal was hatched in a northern, cold climate.

Russian goats are capable of producing up to 600 kg of milk per year. Fat content and quality are satisfactory - 4.5 percent. Pets tolerate the climatic conditions in which their ancestors grew up. The Russian goat is unpretentious in care and is capable of producing up to 200 grams of fluff per year.

Russian white goat breed
