Any maintenance of animals requires the presence of containers for feed and water. Such items can either be purchased at the appropriate store, or you can make it yourself. Both options involve a large number of models with different capacities, which are designed for both adult pigs and young.

Before you delve into this issue, you should familiarize yourself with the general requirements that apply to feed tanks.

  1. The trough should always be clean, which means that the tank should be one that is easy to release from leftover food and wash.
  2. Feeders can be clogged with particles of bedding, hay and other things, and this is best avoided.
  3. Feed should not be poured out of containers, this applies to both wet components and dry.
  4. Each type of feed has its own packaging. Drinking water intended for drinking water.
  5. For liquid feed tanks should be sealed as follows, so that nothing leaks. Such wastefulness of feed leads not only to losses, but also to the pollution of premises for animals.
  6. The design is made so that the pigs could easily get to the food. All corners should be properly sealed and have no sharp edges so that animals cannot get hurt.
  7. The feeder is best placed under a small slope, so that all food will be from one side, and the remnants will be easy to clean.

A few words about the size

It does not matter what choice the owner will make: the purchase of feeders or their manufacture. It is important to note that the capacity for young animals will not fit adult animals and vice versa. It is preferable to feed the pigs from small tanks with low sides, adult pigs will need other sizes. With a large number of livestock to save service time, you can install long pelvis so that animals can eat at the same time.

In the following table it is possible to get acquainted in more detail with the sizes for different feeds that will fit a particular age group in width. For suckers width and height are indicated.

What are the capacities for feed

As mentioned above, each animal of a certain age needs its own capacity. On this basis, they can be divided into two types:

  1. Simple construction. Under this definition will fit any container that is at hand: a bowl, bowl, pelvis, trough for pigs.
  2. Bunker type Here everything is automated. Food comes from the top compartment when the bottom becomes empty. Making your own such a trough is not so easy.
  3. Stationary. They are installed in animal rooms and are fixed in such a way that pigs cannot move them from one place to another.
  4. Mobile. Can be unilateral or bilateral (with longitudinal partitions). Most often they can be found on a large complex with a large number of animals.
  5. Individual feeder - designed for one animal.
  6. Group construction - for several pigs.

The best option for any farmer - to approach the issue of creating a container for food creatively. This not only saves finances and time to search, but as a result you can get a feeder that will be ideally suited to the farm.

Plastic barrel

Any disused barrel will do. The main thing is to make sure that it is not used for storage of toxic chemicals.

What should be at hand:

  • large plastic barrel,
  • bars of wood
  • several screws
  • felt-tip pen
  • electric jigsaw,
  • sandpaper.

  1. The barrel is divided into several parts, for example, 4. Apply the appropriate marking.
  2. Along the contour lines, cut the plastic with an electric jigsaw into 4 even parts.
  3. To process all sharp edges, and with an emery paper to make grinding.
  4. The legs are made of bars and attached to the sides of the structure with screws.
  5. The feed tank is ready, it can be supplied to animals.

Using a gas cylinder

Such a thing is in any household. It is not necessary to get rid of an unnecessary cylinder and think where to hand it. In the presence of pigs in the subsidiary, you can make a strong and durable capacity under the feed. The service life of this design is at least two decades.

What tools are needed:

  • used cylinder
  • a brush and a solution with the addition of soap to check if there is gas left in the tank,
  • large amounts of water
  • scissors for cutting metal
  • Bulgarian,
  • reinforcing bars,
  • metal corners,
  • gas stove,
  • welding machine.

  1. At the gas cylinder, open the valve to full. Residual gas (if any) must be released. You can check the soap solution, which is applied to the hole at the outlet. In the absence of an inflated bubble, you can proceed to work.
  2. The cylinder must be turned to one of the sides and the valve must be cut off using scissors. The next part needs to be done with an assistant. While there are sawing work, you need to water cut, so that there is no heating and the appearance of sparks.
  3. Then the tank must be filled with water completely, periodically shaking it to get rid of condensate. Used water should be poured as far as possible from the living quarters.
  4. It is necessary to determine the desired depth of the feeder. If it is intended to use the tank for sows and young stock, the balloon should be divided in half. One half to do more, and the other less. If feeding troughs are needed for adult animals, the balloon should be divided into 2 equal parts horizontally.
  5. For sawing you need to take a grinder.
  6. To prevent pigs from climbing into the feed tank, you need to weld the reinforcement over the structure.
  7. In order to completely destroy the gas odor, it is necessary to use a gas burner and carry out firing.
  8. The remaining reinforcement is used to create strong legs.
  9. The feeder is ready, you can use it.

How to use pipes

For the manufacture of feeders suitable pipe made of ceramic or asbestos cement. The durability of materials will make the container suitable for long-term operation in the household.

What you need to make:

  • the pipe, its length must correspond to the number of livestock,
  • boards or cement mortar,
  • reinforcing bars,
  • welding machine,
  • Bulgarian,
  • Master OK,
  • electric jigsaw saw.

How to make a pig feeder:

  1. Cut the pipe to the desired length horizontally.
  2. It is worth considering that this design is best done stationary, and therefore you need to take care in advance about choosing a place in the room for animals, and there to create supports of concrete.
  3. Install the pipe with plugs on the edges. Concrete or wooden planks are suitable for their manufacture.
  4. The remaining reinforcement will go to the creation of a kind of mesh, which will prevent the penetration of animals into the feed tank.
  5. The design is ready, and can be used for its intended purpose.

Automatic feeders: what is their advantage?

The invention is really useful, suitable for dry feed, besides with a very simple principle of operation. The upper part is filled with fodder that goes into the lower compartment, from where animals take it. As soon as it becomes empty, the new portion will go to the pigs.

Key Features

The size and basic parameters of the container for the issuance of food play a key role in the successful breeding of animals.

Choosing troughs for pigs, you need to take into account some features:

  • Capacity sizes for young and adult individuals must be different. In addition, when keeping large livestock, it is necessary to conveniently install food containers so that all animals can freely approach the feed.
  • Material must be durable, but easy to clean and disinfect.
  • Better to do capacity sealed so that animals cannot scatter food or contaminate it with litter and manure.

Types of pig feeders

The types of pig feeders are very diverse and differ not only by the principle of feed distribution, but also by the age of the animals. For example, for small pigs there will be a rather small capacity made from a plastic bucket, and large boars and sows need to install spacious and comfortable models that can accommodate the required amount of feed.

Bunker feeders do it yourself

The design of the bunker type is considered the most practical. You can make it yourself, using the drawings and photos. In the upper part of the set bunker (a small box of wood or metal), which is poured dry food. A bunker is inserted into a trough made of any available materials (Figure 2).

Figure 2. Drawing and photo of bunker construction

In front of the set wooden limiter that prevents the scattering of feed.

The convenience of this design is that it can immediately be poured a lot of food. He is constantly in the bunker, but part of it pours into the trough. When pigs eat all the food, a new batch is poured from the bunker.

Feeders do it yourself

Making a pig feeder with your own hands is very simple. For this, it is not necessary to choose a complex structure. It is enough to make a small trough of plastic, metal or wood, and set the bounding strips along the edges.

But in the manufacture of self-made containers you need to carefully select materials (Figure 3):

  • The finished product must be durable and resistant to corrosion, but it is easy to clean and disinfect,
  • The size should correspond to the age and number of individuals in the farm,
  • Along the edges, bars of reinforcement are installed so that animals have free access to food, but at the same time they cannot turn over the container.
Figure 3. Types of homemade feeders

Drawings for the manufacture and photo homemade feeders you will find in this article.

Galvanizing Feeders

A simple elongated tub can be made of galvanized. It is better to take sheets with a thickness of at least 0.5 mm so that the finished container has sufficient strength and durability.

The edges of the sheet are folded inward so that the animals do not hurt themselves while eating, and at the bottom they fasten the legs for stability of the finished structure.

Capacity of galvanized can be of any shape, as long as its size matches the age of individuals and their number.

Drinkers in a pigsty

In the pigsty must install drinking bowls for fresh water. For this purpose, any sufficiently deep capacity. Feeding trough and drinker should interfere with the maximum single dose of food or water. You can make a container for drinking water yourself using any available materials. Figure 4 shows schematically the procedure for manufacturing such a container from a conventional pipe.

Figure 4. The manufacturing procedure of the drinker

To prevent diseases of livestock, it is necessary to thoroughly wash the trough after the issuance of feed and periodically disinfect them with special solutions.

The main types of drinkers

Drinkers for pigs are of several types, but you need to pick them up so that the water always remains clean, and animals at any time can drink freely. Below will be described the main types of structures that are best suited for use in home gardens.

A cup model is a small container with flanges at the edges that fills with water through a valve or nipple (Figure 5).

The design of this model is very convenient, as the animals have constant access to clean water, but they can not spray it on the sides. The principle of operation is that water is supplied to the tank through a special hose, but does not spill out until the animal presses the special pedal inside.

Figure 5. Using a cup design

Pigs quickly get used to such drinkers, and water is consumed evenly, as it is supplied only when necessary.

Nipple (teat)

Nipple models can be used to supply water to individuals of different ages. Water is supplied through a rubber hose or a plastic pipe, at the end of which there is a valve with a nipple (Figure 6).

Figure 6. Nipple constructions for adults and piglets

When a pig is thirsty, it simply goes to the nipple, presses its mouth on the nipple, and a portion of water flows out of it. This design has a high hygiene, as drinking water is not contaminated, and the containers themselves need only occasionally be washed. The only drawback is the high cost of the finished design, which can only be bought in the store.

Vacuum drinkers are considered the simplest, and they can easily be made by hand from scrap materials.

In order to make a vacuum structure, you need to take a jar or any other container, pour water into it, cover it with a bowl and turn it over. As a result, part of the water will flow out into the bowl, and when the pigs drink it, a new portion of the liquid will flow from the can (Figure 7).

Figure 7. Example of a vacuum drinker

Such models are installed mainly in piglets, as it is difficult to find a large container that can hold enough water for adults. However, vacuum models need to be monitored, as animals easily turn them over.

Pursuing the breeding of animals in private household, each owner tries to organize the process as simply and profitably as possible. After all, the cost of feed mainly affect the cost of production, and, therefore, the profitability of farming. In this regard, the organization of the pig is no exception. The right choice of pig feeders plays a very important role in minimizing feed loss to a minimum. Beforehand, you should get acquainted with the types, types and requirements for feeders, so that when choosing or making, you can satisfy both animals and your own wallet at no extra cost.

General and sanitary requirements

  • Feeders for piglets, adult pigs and sows should be kept clean. The main requirement: the simplicity of the process of washing and cleaning.
  • Preventing food from entering and clogging up in animal products,
  • Preventing dry food from spilling or turning wet,
  • Different types of feed for pigs (liquid and dry) should be placed in different feeders, and drinking water in special drinkers.
  • The feeder for liquid feed should be airtight. The flow of fluid from the trough increases the humidity in the room, which adversely affects the health of pigs, and in addition - it is a constant economic damage to the owner,
  • Providing free access to feed. The best option would be a feeder with rounded or beveled edges so that the animal effortlessly gets to the feed,
  • Also more convenient for animals are feeders that have a slope. It allows the remains of food to accumulate in one place.

How to make a feeder for pigs with their own hands

An example would be a plastic or metal trough for pigs.

The advantage of such feeders is their cheapness and simplicity, but the feed mixtures in them are easily contaminated, and it is impossible to dose them.

A different principle of action in bunker feeders for pigs. Designed for the distribution of dry food designs are:

  • from the bunker where the feed mixture is initially poured,
  • from the tray, which then gets food,
  • from the restrictive slats that do not give extra feed from the bunker immediately get on the pallet,
  • from the pallet from where the food is eaten by pigs,
  • from the side obstacles that do not allow the mixture to get enough sleep to the limits of the feeder.

From the bunker filled to the top, the feed for the pigs goes to the pallet through the slot at the bottom, where animals eat it with pleasure. As soon as the pig trough is empty, the slot opens into the bunker, as a new portion of food is poured down and the feeder is filled again. As a result:

  • the food stays clean and fresh longer
  • even the weakest and most late pets do not go hungry,
  • food does not crumble on the floor, which allows saving and not being afraid of infecting animals with helminths or infections of another kind,
  • a cattle breeder spends less time servicing and feeding his herd.

What are the pig drinkers

Basins and cups used on private farms as drinkers are increasingly being replaced with comfortable nipple or teat drinkers. Cup drinkers, although they allow to save water, but they accumulate dirt and food residues very quickly, which makes it necessary to constantly monitor the cleanliness of the tank and often change water.

Nipple watering systems have a rather complicated automatic design, which includes a water treatment unit, a pressure regulator, pipes for water supply and a mechanical filter.

It is not easy to make such a construction by yourself, it is easier to purchase a nipple or nipple drinker. Only when buying, try to choose the appropriate size of the nipple according to the age of the pigs, and fix the drinker at the optimum height at an angle - it will be easier for the animals to drink and less water will be spilled. Как видно, хитрости существуют не только в изготовлении кормушек для свиней своими руками, но и при создании поилок.

The technology of feeding pigs is one of the determining factors for farm productivity and production costs. At present, pig farms prefer to use a mechanized feeding system, thus reducing labor costs and increasing the dosage accuracy of feed.

Succulent fodder is prepared with the help of fodder pans and shredders. Steamed or raw feed mixtures of different humidity mix the appropriate mixers. Unloading from storage and storage can be done very simply - by gravity, and the transport of concentrated feed - by means of pneumatic transport.

What are and how to make their own pig feeder

They deliver food either by dumping tractor trailers, or dumping vehicles, or by specialized feed trucks for endorders. Transportation of liquid feed is carried out by means of pipelines at the expense of pneumatic installations or volumetric hydraulic pumps. In small pig farms, feeds are delivered to the pig houses using self-propelled or feeders that are aggregated with the tractor, which distribute the feed to the feeders. Complete feed of grain feed and nutritional supplements are made using specialized automatic feed units.

The automated system for the distribution of dry feed has several advantages: saving resources, ease of operation, a significant reduction in labor costs, work in automatic mode through the programmer.

The automated dry feeding system includes the following equipment:

Accumulative bunker of operational stock in which storage of such quantity of a feed which could be enough for 2-3 days is carried out
Reception funnel
Chain-washer aft conveyor driven by an electric drive
Conveyor supply pipe
Sensor that regulates the conveyor stop
Hopper feeders or dispensers
Remote Control

Automated distribution of dry loose and granulated combined feeds is carried out by rod-washer dispensers or wire-washer conveyors to hopper feeders. In many farms, distributors-mixers are used that perform several functions simultaneously: mixing, transporting and dispensing to feeders. The use of mobile feeders is less resource intensive. These units are compact and can distribute feed along the entire length of the building. When reconstructing pig farms, the transition to a dry feeding system will be optimal, in which bunker feeders for growing and fattening will be present, individual feeders in rooms with a content of pregnant queens, as well as chain-washer conveyors. As a rule, equipment for the distribution of dry feed from different manufacturers has the same design. But some differences in the technical solutions of individual parts are still present.

The feed enters the pigs in the bunker feeders after they swing the lower bell. The best option is when the hopper feeders are equipped with an internal agitator, which ensures that there is no arboring or freezing of the feed. Such equipment is recommended to be used in pig houses that are not equipped with slit floors, where water wash is used. Feeders come in several types, depending on the number of bins in them. And the more bunkers, the more pigs can be served by one feeder. Bunker feeders are part of an automated feeding system. If necessary, a separate feeder can be disconnected from the general system and it can be repaired or serviced without interrupting the process. In addition, the design of bunker feeders allows you to make various additives to the feed or to individually feed a separate group of animals.

Single hopper feeders for pigs are designed for 50 pigs, two bunker feeders for 70 pigs, which additionally saves equipment costs.

The dose of feed is regulated in a wide range depending on the age of the pigs.

The latest development is a feeder with a bell in the form of a lattice, which allows piglets to more easily get food. The process of feeding a dose of feed is accompanied by play, which in practice increases feed intake and, consequently, weight gain. Recently, along with traditional bunker feeders, automatic feeding machines are being used more and more for group distribution and feeding.
Compared with bunker feeders, they have a number of advantages and only one drawback - they are somewhat more expensive, since they have a more complex structure.

The indisputable advantages of feed automates are as follows:

improved feeding hygiene
no sticking of feed
economical feed consumption, accurate dosing,
minimum feed loss
empirically proven best gain,
free choice of installation site
lightweight service for staff.
On the market of modern equipment there are a large number of different types of feed machines. In most cases, feeding on all feeders is carried out by swinging the lower bell by pigs. In this case, the dose of feed poured into the pan and eaten. The dosage is set manually with a special dispenser.

Among the main requirements that modern feeding and feeding systems in pig breeding must meet are hygiene, availability of feed for animals, unhindered admission, ergonomics, economy and ease of maintenance.

The design of feeding machines from different manufacturers is often very similar. The differences can be found in the way in which the animal receives a given portion of feed.

Most feed automatics have two main ways of feeding dosing:

the feed is eaten by animals from the gap between the metering cup and the tray of the machine, the amount of feed is established by increasing or decreasing this gap,
the feed falls on the trough pan as a result of pushing the lever.
Unlike other bunker feeders for pigs, the machine is equipped with a built-in internal agitator, which allows to avoid “freezing” or curdling the feed, especially in a room with high humidity when using hydraulic washes (without slotted floors).

Feeders are made of painted metal, stainless steel, plastic or composite materials. If for piglets in rearing, the strength of the feeding trough material is not very important, then fattening pigs will quickly eat up plastic parts, therefore for them, feeding troughs made of metal and composite materials that are not inferior in strength to granite are preferable.
