Spruce Canadian "Konika" is a rather popular conifer tree, which is actively used when landscape designers create park areas. According to all its characteristics, Konica (glauca) is a Canadian blue-gray spruce, only in miniature. She was specially bred by breeders who were aiming at getting a full-fledged spruce tree, only of considerably smaller sizes, which would preserve all its qualities and external decorative beauty. Thanks to their efforts, today glacier conic takes leading positions in decorating garden plots and park lawns.

Konik spruce has an average height of about one and a half meters, in some cases, some specimens can reach four meters. The bonsai has a cone-shaped crown with thin and soft needles of a bluish color. The root of the conic rod and located almost on the surface of the soil. Spruce grows slowly, its height increases by an average of three centimeters per year and it reaches one and a half meters only by twenty years. Konika belongs to coniferous long-livers and can decorate gardens for five centuries.

El Konika is represented by two types of landscape design. This is Konica glauca and Alberta globe. Konika Glauka is a dwarf spruce (1.5 m) in which the blue cone-shaped crown. Alberta globe is a conifer tree with even smaller parameters. This is a short spruce, its height rarely reaches one meter. The crown is spherical, and the needles are soft and dense. A brief description of the appearance does not, of course, the entirety of the picture. Canadian Konik needs to see with his own eyes to appreciate the beauty of her appearance. But the description of the conditions for its cultivation and the rules of care will help to learn all the subtleties and advantages of planting Canadian spruce in the garden plot.

Planting and growing

Dwarf blue-gray spruce can be grown not only in open ground, but also as an ornamental houseplant, of course, subject to certain rules.

Konica in the winter does not tolerate high temperatures. Therefore, at this time, flowerpots with spruce need to be placed in areas where the air temperature does not exceed ten degrees of heat. Room maintenance also requires regular and abundant watering of the soil. But it must be strictly metered, excessive moisture adversely affects the state of the needles, and it changes shade, and may also begin to crumble.

In the summer, it is recommended to take the pot with spruce to fresh air and set it in well-lit areas, but protected from direct sunlight. To maintain the decorative qualities of the needles, the tree in the summertime periodically sprayed with warm purified water. When growing Konica should not forget about the addition of additional substances to the soil. It is necessary to use special complex fertilizers for conifers. This may be the drug "Zircon", "Hall", "Appin" and others.

But even so it is better to grow Canadian spruce in the open field. After all, this is its natural habitat, which means that in these conditions it will reveal its decorative qualities to the maximum, and caring for it will be much easier.

The landing of the fir-tree should be carried out according to the following rules:

  • you need to choose the right place
  • prepare a sapling
  • provide the necessary ground in advance.

Landing Koniki should be carried out in areas of the garden where there is partial shade, so kaya scorching sun will surely damage the needles. In addition, the tree should be naturally protected from drafts and strong winds. It is necessary to plant spruce on an even place, so that spring water does not collect melt and promotes the appearance of rot on the roots.

Planting dwarf conifer trees is possible at any time of the year. But the spruce is best adapted to the new place in the cool season. Therefore, it is best to plant Konik in the ground in spring or autumn. Also, individual gardeners practice planting seedlings even in winter, when the air temperature is slightly above zero and the ground is not frozen. In the first months after disembarkation, they ate into the ground (this applies to the autumn and spring period), it is watered twice a week. The volume of water per tree - at least ten liters.

Before landing, the ground is prepared. The site where the spruce tree will be planted is digged in advance. Pits are made for trees and fertilizer for coniferous trees of long action and humus is applied to them. Then the soil is mixed with turf, peat and sand. And only after this, the spruce seedlings are planted in the ground, the roots of which are previously cleared of the old earth. The trees need to be watered, and the land around the mulch peat.

Proper planting of the fir-tree Glauk in the open ground is only a part of all worries when growing Konika in the garden. In addition, it is necessary for an ornamental tree to provide proper care.

Proper care and breeding

Dwarf gray-gray spruce unpretentious garden plant. Caring for her is quite simple and elementary. All the tree needs is:

  • regular watering
  • protection from the scorching sun,
  • fertilization in the soil,
  • timely detection of the disease and its treatment.

Here, perhaps, the whole care. But even under such simple conditions for growing fir trees, diseases can arise and pests can appear that not only spoil the appearance of the trees, but can also lead to the death of Koniki. Most often, if the care was organized insufficiently and mistakes were made during planting, the following diseases and pests appear on the fir trees:

  • Tracheomycosis is a fungus that appears in the soil and damages the roots. This disease is not treated, the affected plant is subject to complete destruction,
  • rust is a fungal crown disease. The manifestation of the disease - rusty growths on the branches. The affected trees should be sprayed with special preparations once a week until they are completely cured,
  • conifer fungus (Shutte) - it covers with white needles, then it darkens and falls. They fight the fungus with a solution of copper sulfate and special preparations such as "Trichodermin" or "Alirin-B".

Poor care for spruce leads to the fact that it is attacked and pests. Most often it is a false guard and a bark beetle. And if it is possible to fight with a false shield with the help of special means of combating garden pests, then it is almost impossible to cope with the bark beetle. It damages the bark and penetrates the inside of the trunk, where it lays its larvae at a sufficient depth. If the bark beetle is barely wound up, then it would be best to destroy it in order to prevent further reproduction of this pest.

At home, the Canadian conic multiplies by grafting. Of course, this issue should be approached with all seriousness, since the reproduction of spruce cuttings requires some effort and some time. Therefore, if you decide to grow new copies ate yourself, then you need to be patient.

And so, cuttings harvested in June. They are taken from the lower branches of an already sufficiently mature tree (5-7 years). The length of the cuttings should be about ten centimeters and they should have a “heel”, part of the bark of the branch from which they were cut. Then, the cuttings are placed for two to three hours in a growth stimulator solution and only after that they are planted in specially prepared soil for rooting to a depth of two and a half centimeters. For cuttings planted in this way need regular care. They need to be kept in a constantly wet ground, while simple watering alternate with watering growth stimulant solution. Also, the soil around the cuttings is periodically loosened. Within three months, a tissue is formed on the lower sections, which tightens the wounds and contributes to the development of the roots. The root system of the cuttings begins to develop only next year. Note that the cuttings of spruce need proper care for about five years, after which the already fully formed young seedling can be planted in the garden.

As you can see, the grafting process is quite laborious, but it allows you to independently grow new instances of spruce for your garden.
